VERY RARE CRUIJDE BOECK BY REMBERT DODOENS (DODONAEUS) FROM 1563.
“Cruijde Boeck. In den welcken die geheele historie, dat es tgheslacht, tfatsoen, naem, natuere, cracht ende werckinghe, van den cruyden, niet alleen hier te lande wassende, maer oock van den anderen vremden in der medecynen oorboorlijck, met grooter neersticheyt begrepen ende verclaert es, met der selver cruyden natuerlijck naer dat leven conterfeytsel daer by ghestelt.”. This is the so called “first revised” (second) edition of 1563. It was the only reprint edited by Rembert Dodoens (1517-1585) himself and was published by Vander Loe in Antwerp. It contains a lot more woodcuts than the first edition of 1554 (“Van nieuws oversien, ende met seer veel/schoone nieuwe figueren vermeerdert.”). Dodoens was a Flemish doctor, but his ancestors came from Fryslan (Friesland). The name Dodoens is a conjugation of “Doede”. His Latin name was Rembertus Dodonaeus.
Condition report:
the current binding is not original. It is probably from the 19th century and is in need of replacement. Throughout the book there are wormholes, some pages are restored and cut in the past, the thirteen last pages of the Index (“Register van die Cracht”) are missing; so this includes the woodcut of the final page. The book contains some handwritten revisions in Latin and Dutch, probably by a person called “Arie Leeuwenburgh” who’s name is written in the book. This Leeuwenburgh could be one of the previous owners. He was a pharmacist. Price on request.
