Early Zsolnay dish with gold and Persian motifs

Vilmos Zsolnay (1828–1900) was from 1863 the director of the Zsolnay porcelain factory in Pécs (Hungary). He introduced new motifs and glazes which made the company world famous. In 1878 Zsolnay took part in the World Exhibition in Paris and won the gold medal (Grand Prix) for his high-fire, fine white earthenware with enamel glazes. This early dish with Persian motifs is from around that period (the stamped form number is 459). Zsolnay used gold to imitate the works of Fabergé and Renaissance goldsmiths. From this Historicism style Zsolnay evolved in later years to the Art Nouveau, which became the “golden age” of the factory. A similiar dish with more traditional glazes is in the “official” Zsolnay Museum (see http://www.gyugyi.hu/ and http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/zsolnaymuseum). That dish was part of the famous collection of Dr. László Gyugyi. The diameter of the dish is 24,4 cm. The right part of the mark reads “T.J.M.”, being the starting letters of the three children of Vilmos: Terez, Julia, Miklos. Price on request.
